March 20 was International Day of Happiness and a reminder to try to bring happiness to yourself and others any day.
Most students do have a busy schedule, but even taking as little as 20 minutes to do something that you know will make your day happier can make a difference. It’s usually the little things we celebrate that can make the biggest difference. It's all about focusing on what really matters.
The International Day of Happiness is an official holiday that was created by the United Nations in 2012. It recognizes and embraces happiness as a universal goal and many people worldwide celebrate. Its goal is for a more inclusive and joyful society.
On this day you can remind yourself to be kind to yourself and others around you. The day is one to speak kindness, give a simple compliment or smile to somebody. Embrace it in ways by being mindful of your attitude as it can deeply affect those around you. Doing something kind for someone else, oftentimes doing something kind for somebody else can give a boost to your happiness level.
If you do happen to have some spare time to celebrate some ways you can do this is by doing something nice for yourself. For example, that can be going for a walk, creating a playlist of all your favorite songs and listening on repeat, completing something that’s been on your to-do list, creating a joylist,or getting a snack you love (your favorite dessert, coffee, treat).
An important aspect of the International Day of Happiness is connecting with people you care about. That can be family, friends, a significant other, coworkers, neighbors, etc. Spending time with people you love can contribute to your happiness giving you a feeling of belonging and evidently reducing stress. Maybe going out to eat with a special person in your life or something as little as going on a walk with them can help brighten your day. Giving a call to someone you haven’t talked to in a while and catching up with them is another great idea.
Lastly, surround yourself with positivity. It can be difficult to always maintain a happy mood, there will be things on a day-to-day basis that will steer in the wrong direction than we intended and can contribute to our negative mood for the day but staying positive is the right choice even if it feels like the hardest. For a full day try to maintain positivity in circumstances that you usually wouldn’t and you may like it so much you will try implementing that tactic further on.
