Gen Z and Technology: Is It Helping or Hurting the Generation?

By Alex White

Technology has become a huge part of everyday life, especially for Gen Z. From scrolling through TikTok to posting on Instagram, most teens and young adults spend hours a day online. Because of this, many people are starting to question whether this strong attachment to technology is actually helping Gen Z move forward or setting them back. Gen Z, which includes people born roughly between the late 1990s and early 2010s, is the first generation to grow up completely surrounded by technology.

Unlike older generations, they don’t remember a time without smartphones, social media, or instant access to information. For many students, checking their phone is one of the first things they do in the morning and the last thing they do before going to sleep. There are definitely clear benefits to this. Technology makes it easier to communicate, learn, and stay connected. Students can use apps to complete assignments, research topics instantly, and even collaborate with classmates without being in the same place.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram also give people a space to express themselves creatively. Many Gen Z users have even turned their content into opportunities, building personal brands or making money through sponsorships and views. “I feel like technology helps a lot with learning new things,” one student said. “If I don’t understand something, I can just look it up or watch a video explaining it.”

At the same time, there are also downsides that can’t be ignored. One of the biggest concerns is how much time Gen Z spends on their phones. It’s easy to lose track of time while scrolling, which can take away from schoolwork, hobbies, or even sleep. Some students say they struggle to focus because they are so used to constant notifications and quick content. Another major issue is mental health.

Social media often shows only the best parts of people’s lives, which can make others feel like they’re not doing enough or not good enough. This can lead to comparison, low self-esteem, and anxiety. Even though people know that what they see online isn’t always real, it can still affect how they feel. “I catch myself comparing my life to what I see online, even though I know it’s not realistic,” another student explained.

Even with these negatives, some believe that technology itself isn’t the problem, it’s how it’s used. When used in a positive and balanced way, it can be extremely helpful. For example, students can learn new skills, stay informed about current events, and connect with people fromall over the world.

Technology has also made it easier for young people to speak out on important issues and share their opinions. Overall, technology is both helping and challenging Gen Z at the same time. It creates opportunities for growth, creativity, and connection, but it also brings distractions and pressure.

The real question isn’t just whether technology is good or bad, it’s whether Gen Z can learn to use it in a healthy and balanced way. As technology continues to grow, its impact on this generation will only become more important. For now, it’s clear that it’s not going anywhere and neither is Gen Z’s connection to it.k to posting on Instagram, most teens and young adults spend hours a day online.
