Anxiety is becoming a harmful arm for students in schools and college. A high percentage of students are suffering from anxiety which causes them stress and feel desperate at the time to complete their homework or exams.

Unfortunately, many students are dropping out of school because of the pressure to have their assignments completed at a designated date and time. However, taking care of our mental health is the key to having the stability to progress in life and many students have their own ways to manage their anxiety.

According to Ilianni Fernandez, a Norwalk Community College student, when she gets anxious, she takes deep breaths to relax her body or she simply takes a walk and listens to music to clear her mind. Her best advice is that if you start feeling anxious you should take some deep breaths to calm yourself down and take a walk to clear your mind while listening to some music that makes you happy, she said.

According to Nicole J. Leblanc who did the research for Harvard Health Blog, “It's not entirely clear what is causing this trend, though research shows a strong association between time spent on electronic communication (social media, smartphones) and reduced well-being among adolescents.” https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/anxiety-in-college-what-we-know-and-how-to-cope-2019052816729

“Electronic communication might interfere with adjustment to college if it replaces healthy coping behaviors like exercise, face-to-face social interactions, and studying,” according to the article.

“Whenever I feel anxious about anything, mainly from doing assignments or taking exams, I usually give myself a break from whatever I am doing and go to the gym because that gives me isolation so I can focus on myself. But everyone is different, and we are all over the place when we are anxious, but my best advice for you is to focus on something else that can help you relax your mind and once you are good it will allow you to be more productive,” said Aaron Vivar.

We must look for help when it is needed and NCC has a great program for us which is TimelyCare where you can access 24/7 medical and mental health support for all Connecticut State Community Colleges students.

The following services are there for you 24/7 medical visits: Talk Now visits (24/7 mental health support), scheduled counseling visits (12 per year), and health coaching visits are available at no cost.

Information about available mental health support at the college is found here.
